NTA requires MDMS registration for mobile devices

Since 15 May 2023, mobile devices sold in Nepal must have their IMEI numbers registered in NTA’s Mobile Device Management System. Here is what it means for type approval.

From 15 May 2023 (Jestha 1, 2080), the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) began enforcing its Mobile Device Management System (MDMS). The IMEI number of every mobile device must be registered in the system, and only registered devices can be distributed and sold in Nepal.

Who it affects

Importers and sellers of mobile devices register them in MDMS after receiving approval from NTA. Although the rule is aimed at mobile handsets, in practice it reaches any product with a cellular radio and an IMEI, such as tablets, cellular routers, modules and trackers.

What it means for type approval

  • Include the GSMA TAC letter in your type approval application for any device with a cellular radio.
  • Keep import figures consistent. The quantities registered in MDMS should match the import and sales figures you report when applying for the permanent certificate.
  • Plan with your importer. Type approval, MDMS registration and import permits are separate steps. Agree early who handles each one.

How we help

We include the TAC letter in the application, coordinate with your importer in Nepal, and check that the figures line up before the permanent application is filed.
